Nicola McCafferty

Artist Biography

Born 1963, Nicola currently resides in Wellington, New Zealand.

Her work characterises visual symbolic connections to everyday life:

  • Imaginary versions of cell structures within our body, which define who we are and complete our individual status.

  • The pharmaceutical world - the prescription medicines used to alter those cells - changing the patterns within.

  • The digital world of Binary Code, with its seemingly simple 0 and 1 format, dominating our connection to the world via the internet - our lives have become easier yet more complex.

  • Household scenes painted onto found decorative fabric with textile ink – beads hand sewn over the top creating an extravagance.

  • Trees and houses painted in textile ink on silk - hand sewn onto wire frames - creating a 3D floating effect.

  • Landscapes and scenery painted from photography captured by the artist upon her travels.

  •  Found vintage paper – drawing in pencil or ink – layered, creating a floating effect – telling a new story.
